アカデミー賞11部門の史上最多受賞に輝くピーター・ジャクソン監督が贈る、アクション・アドベンチャー超大作『ホビット』シリーズ。『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』から続く13年間に及ぶサーガの完結編となる『ホビット 決戦のゆくえ』が公開中だ。

シネマカフェでは、本作を手がけてきたピーター・ジャクソン監督が描くファンタジーの世界に潜入すべく、ニュージーランドのロケ地巡りを敢行！　今回は、『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』で登場する印象的なシーンをピックアップしてロケーションをご紹介！

大迫力の映像と見たことのない絶景――『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』『ホビット』に魅了された人であれば感じることであろう。本シリーズでは、ニュージーランドの中でも格別に美しい地域で撮影が行われているのだ。

ニュージーランドの首都・ウェリントンから最もアクセスしやすいロケ地は、市中心部から徒歩圏内にあるビクトリア山。ここでは、『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』のフロドやサムたちが“黒の乗り手”から身を隠すホビット庄の森のシーンが撮影された。

『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』のときにはスタント協会がなかったため、一般の道場やジムの人にスタントマンをお願いしていたという。1つのキャラクターに4人のスタントが必要だったこともあり、その分一般の人に依頼するのも苦労したようだ。

またすぐ近くは市街地のため、一般の人々や街の風景が映り込まないように上から撮影したり、ジャクソン監督お得意のCGで森林の雰囲気を変えていたとのこと。さらに坂の上に黒の乗り手が登場するシーンでは、息が白く見えないようにホースを後ろに隠しながら息を流し込んだりするなど、たったワンシーンの中にも多くの工夫が施されている。

これらは、「flat earth」のツアーガイドが名シーンの写真と共に紹介してくれる。自身でその場を体感するべく再現シーンを写真に収めることも可能だ。全国から駆け付けるファンの中には、衣装も揃えてくる人もいるほか、エルフ語も勉強して完璧に仕上げているファンも少なくないようで「エルフ語を流暢に話すファンには、さすがにビックリしたよ」と苦笑する一幕も。

実はこのビクトリア山は『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』最初の撮影場所だそう。「ここには技術・美術・自然が揃っている。市民全員が一丸となっているから、俳優にとってもスタッフにとっても心地よく撮影ができる場所なんだ」と話すガイドさん。彼らに話を聞いてみるとユーモアたっぷりに答えてくれるので、ツアーに参加した際は質問を投げかけてみると面白い撮影秘話を教えてくれるかも？
